VIP guests help school celebrate new status

SCHOOLS Secretary Ed Balls attended a star-studded event to celebrate a prestigious new moniker for Castleford High School The school has been awarded Technology and Sport Specialist College after an outstanding 70 per cent of students achieved five A-C's in their GCSEs.
The school is now called Castleford High School Technology and Sports College.
The school's latest cutting edge technology facilities and excellence in PE and school sport are also behind the new title.
Ed Balls, Secretary of State for Children, Schools and Families visited the school along with his wife and local MP Yvette Cooper and Great Britain head coach Tony Smith together with Rugby Football League National Development Manager Andy Harland.
Former students who have made a sporting career for themselves who attended the event included Tim Bresnan, Yorkshire and England Cricketer, Brett Ferres, Wakefield Wildcats and England Rugby League star and Leeds United and England women's footballer Bridie Fox.
Castleford Tigers head coach Terry Matterson, captain Awen Guttenbeil, assistant manager Andy Hay and Stuart B arrow, Player Performance Manager also joined the visit.
The schools sports hall was burnt down just 16 months ago, causing a million pounds worth of damage. Work on the new sports hall and fitness suite will start this July and aims to be completed for March 2009.
Head teacher Roy Vaughan said: "Our new name is a tremendous success story, not only for the staff and students but also the wider community. The added sports status is especially pleasing considering the loss of the sports hall and is a glowing testimony to the effort and hard work of the pupils, staff and governors."
