SCIENCE
All students will study a science course which follows the National Curriculum Schemes of Work for Science at Key Stage 3. The topics are as follows:
Year 7
Acids
Environment
Space and Forces
Particles
Energy
Solutions and Chemical Reactions
Circuits
Cells and Reproduction
Atoms and Elements
Humans
Magnets
Year 8
Variation and Inheritance
Heating and Cooling
Rocks
Compounds and Mixtures
Light
Sound and Hearing
Microbes and Disease
Speeding Up
Energy and Electricity
Plants
Ecology
Gravity and Space
Year 9
Fit and Healthy
Reactions of Metals
Pressure and Moments
Using Chemistry
Environmental Chemistry
Exam preparation work for SATs
Assessments
Each topic is assessed. Towards the end of the Winter, Spring and Summer Term, a formal test is given which will cover all of the topics studied so far. The test results will then be given to you as part of your son/daughters interim and full reports. We will use these assignments to place your son/daughter into the most suitable ability group, which may change throughout the year.
Expectations
Year 7
Although Level 4 is the expected attainment of pupils at the end of key stage 2, the Science Scheme of Work takes account of the fact that some pupils will be working at Level 3 and others at Level 5 when they start with us in Year 7.
Year 8
After a year, most pupils should have progressed by about half a level since Year 7.
Year 9
By the end of Year 9, pupils should have progressed by a level and a half, so most pupils who started at Level 4/5 should have progressed to Level 6 by the end of Year 9.

How you can support us:
· Read through their planners and encourage them to complete homework and to meet deadlines.
· Prompt pupils to use their Science Revision Guide (which can be obtained from school) as a tool for reference during homework, to revise from, and to pre-read about forthcoming topics.
· Talk about difficulties and encourage them to explain their difficulties to you. Together you can work out how to ask the teacher for help.
· Watch science television programmes such as those on health, wildlife and the environment and talk with them about the science world.
· There will also be a weekly Science Club running after school with Miss Brunyee.
