BTEC First Diploma in Art and Design
What is a BTEC First Diploma?
A BTEC First Diploma is a practical, work-related course. You learn by completing projects and assignments that are based on realistic workplace situations, activities and demands.
It provides you with a good basis to go on to a more advanced work-related qualification and to then progress to a career in Art and Design.
What is the course structure?
The course is made up of six units – four compulsory core units that everyone takes and two specialist units. The specialist units enable you to study particular areas in more depth.

Most of the units are completed in Year 10; however units three and four are your Final Major Project (FMP) which is done in Year 11.
How is my work marked?
A BTEC First Diploma is equivalent to four GCSEs grades A* -C. Your work is marked using three grade bands, these are:
Pass - This is equivalent to four GCSE passes at grade C.
Merit - This is equivalent to four GCSE passes at grade B.
Distinction - This is equivalent to four GCSE passes at grade A /A*.
The course will be completed over two years during lessons. There is no final exam. You will be constantly reviewed and assessed to help you achieve the best possible grade.
