Year 7

Football Trainers

Betsy, Liz, Mark, Shari and Wyman played in a match on a rainy day. They left their dry trainers on the sidelines to put on after the game. Since the trainers were all the same make and colour telling them apart was a bit tricky. The only difference was the size. The pile of trainers had one pair of 4, 6, 7, 8 and 9.

Betsy knew hers were the smallest.

Liz said hers were larger than Shari’s but smaller than Mark’s.

Wyman said his were probably the largest.

Who owns which pair of trainers?

Year 8

Pencil Patterns

Cathy, Deena, Jeff, Pete and Sara are collecting and trading pencils. When they began each person had 5 pencils of the same pattern. Each person’s pencils were a different pattern from everyone else’s pattern. Anyone who got a pencil in a trade kept that pencil. This is what happened:

Jeff  began with 5 cartoon pencils and traded pencils with Pete, Cathy and Deena.

Sara began with 5 solid coloured pencils, including 3 solid neon orange and 2 solid neon green. She traded one neon orange pencil with each other girl and one neon green pencil with Pete.

Cathy had 5 pencils illustrated with horses. They were her favourite, so she only traded with Jeff and Sara and kept the rest of her pencils

Pete exchanged one of his striped pencils for a polka dot pencil.

What combination of pencils does each person have at the  end of the trades?

Include the colour if the information is given

Year 9

Family Photo

After seeing Danielle’s recent photo from her school, everyone in the Farell family gathering started looking at old family pictures. Tony commented that when he was the age of Ben in the old photograph, he was twice as old as Danielle is now. Ben added that it was four years ago and in two more years Danielle would be half as old as he is now. Danielle said to Ben “ You and Tony are ten years older than I am. I bet I'll be taller than you when I’m that old.”

How old are Tony, Ben and Danielle now?
