Year 7 Girls Carnegie Champions School National Cup Final 2008

Year 7 Girls

Holy Cross Catholic High School 12    Castleford High School 12

The first of Castleford High’s six teams in the Championship Finals shared the Year Seven Girls trophy with Chorley’s Holy Cross after a hard-fought Final.

Holy Cross made an impressive start when hooker forward Stephanie Treadwell forced her way over in the right hand corner for the opening try.

And she showed that close range efforts were not her only strength when she scored the Chorley school’s second try of the game in the 13th minute. She was given the ball just inside their own half and romped 40 metres to touch down in the left hand corner.

Castleford, who had not been able to turn long periods of pressure on the Holy Cross line into points, made their first impact on the score line with a try by centre Beth Conway just seconds before the halftime whistle.

Undeterred by that setback Holy Cross scored their third try of the game in the opening seconds of the second half when winger Sophie Unsworth beat the Castleford cover on the outside.

A dropped ball close to their own line then cost the Lancashire side dear and Castleford stayed in touch with a try by stand off half Beth Lewis. That lifted the Yorkshire girls’ spirits and they leveled the scores at 12-12 with a try by their hooker Ashleigh-Jo Ward.
